Adult Therapy with Gem Thomson

Gem Thomson

Gem Thomson

BABCP-accredited CBT Therapist | EMDR Therapist | Schema-Focused Therapist | RMN

I work with adults experiencing anxiety, trauma, panic, OCD, depression, emotional patterns, relationship difficulties, over-responsibility, people-pleasing, emotional inhibition, low self-esteem and long-standing patterns that feel difficult to shift.

My  approach combines structured, evidence-based therapy with a deeper understanding of how past experiences, attachment patterns and coping strategies can shape present-day difficulties.

I work in a practical, focused way, while also paying close attention to relational and attachment patterns. This means therapy is not just about talking through problems; it can also involve noticing what happens between therapist and client as it happens, and using this to understand patterns around trust, threat, shame, responsibility, avoidance, pleasing or emotional disconnection.

I draw on CBT, EMDR, Schema Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy and trauma-informed approaches.

Therapy is practical, collaborative and focused on helping people understand what is happening, reduce distress, and build meaningful change.

I stay updated with the latest clinical approaches and complete significantly more CPD than the BABCP annual requirement.

Recent training includes ISST-recognised schema therapy courses, EMDR for complex trauma, working with dissociation, trauma-informed approaches, attachment-based training, and specialist workshops in emotional shut-down and developmental trauma.

Specialist associates

Although I work with most clients personally, there may be times when another specialist is better placed to meet your particular needs. To ensure you receive the most appropriate support, I have built a trusted network of carefully selected associates with a range of specialist skills.

For example, I may recommend a specialist in working with children and young people or a clinical psychologist. If I feel one of my associates would be better suited to your needs, I will always discuss this with you first and, where appropriate, arrange an introduction.
