Schema Therapy in Glasgow for Long-Standing Emotional Patterns

Many people come to schema therapy after trying other forms of therapy. They may have gained insight and understanding — but still feel caught in the same emotional or relational patterns.

Many people come to schema therapy because they feel stuck in long-standing emotional or relationship patterns. You may notice the same difficulties repeating — in relationships, work, or how you feel about yourself — even when you understand why they happen.

Often, people have tried other forms of therapy and gained insight or self-awareness, but still find themselves pulled back into familiar emotional reactions. Counselling or CBT may have helped you think differently or cope better, yet something deeper hasn’t fully shifted.

Schema Therapy offers a deeper way of working with these patterns. Rather than focusing only on the present, we gently explore how earlier experiences shaped emotional responses and coping styles that still operate today. Some of these patterns formed when you were younger, before you had the language or choices you have now, and they can continue to affect how safe, worthy, or connected you feel.

In Schema Therapy, we take time to understand the deeper layers of you — including parts of yourself that may not be fully conscious, or that have been protected by habits such as overthinking, avoidance, self-reliance, or people-pleasing. These strategies often developed for good reasons, even if they now keep you stuck.

Our work is both reflective and experiential. Alongside talking and understanding, we may use imagery, emotion-focused, or relational techniques to help old emotional memories update — not just logically, but emotionally. This allows new ways of responding to develop naturally, rather than being forced.

Schema Therapy blends cognitive, psychodynamic, and experiential approaches. It helps make sense of long-standing patterns or “ways of being” that can feel confusing, painful, or self-critical — often rooted in early relationships or unmet emotional needs.

Together, we work at a pace that feels safe and supportive, building a clearer understanding of who you are within these patterns, and who you are beyond them. The aim is not to fix you, but to help you respond more flexibly, with less self-blame and more emotional freedom. The therapeutic relationship is warm, collaborative, and firmly on your side.
